How to elasticate a fishing whip?
Next up in our how to use a whip pole series, we discuss elasticating our pole whip.
If you own, or are yet to own a telescopic whip – then all you need to do is elasticate the top section. This is because it can be difficult when you retract the whip.
You will need a bung, which is a cone shaped piece of plastic that sits in the bottom of the top section – used to anchor the pole elastic.
A no.5 bung should suffice which will handle fish up to 5lb in weight.
Lastly, you will need a connector to fix your rig to.
You can fix the elastic to the connector using a double overhand loop, and you can use the same knot to fix to the bung – but leaving a large loop which acts as a kind of shock absorber.
You should ‘set the elastic’ with enough tension that it retracts back sufficiently. A diamond threader is a helpful tool for the job.
PS: If you give your pole elastic a good stretch first, this can help when it comes to elasticating your whip.
